OUR COUNTRY IN THE 90S

Between triumph and sorrow - 1996

In the ten-part series, WDR travels back to the 90s - to a time when cell phones were still pressed to the ear like giant bones, music stations such as EinsLive and Viva were launched and the old Ruhr area became a local recreation area.

The year 1996: Big dreams came true.
Especially in sport!
Borussia Dortmund defended the title and became German champions on the penultimate match day.
Shortly afterwards, Oliver Bierhoff, who had grown up in Essen, shot the German national team to the European Championships with his unforgettable golden goal.
And track and field athlete Frank Busemann won Olympic silver in Atlanta.
An incredible story: the Recklinghausen native actually wanted to train as a bank clerk, but then everything turned out quite differently.
Six weeks before the Olympic Games, the then 21-year-old newcomer unexpectedly qualified for Atlanta.
Here he experienced two days that turned his life completely upside down: Despite a serious injury to his foot, which he had sustained during the competition, he won silver and was also voted Sportsman of the Year.
