Our country 1984

Now or never

Early 1984.
There was a great deal of excitement in the Ministry of Defense in Bonn.
The highest German general and deputy NATO commander-in-chief in Europe, Günter Kiessling, was dishonorably dismissed - because he was alleged to be homosexual.
At the time, Udo Röbel was deputy editor-in-chief of the Cologne tabloid "Express".
He became one of the central figures in the Kiessling affair and uncovered an outrageous political scandal.

Things also got political around the Kölsch rock band BAP: they set off on a tour of the GDR.
In their luggage was a new song about armament mania, cold warriors and censorship.
The GDR tour ended before it had even begun.
Martina Klinke made a stink on the carnival stage.
Together with Jürgen Becker and a small group of social pedagogues, she planned an attack on the traditional carnival in 1984.
The alternative carnival began with the "Stunksitzung" - at that time still amateurish, ironic, amateurish and creative.
Today, it is impossible to imagine the Stunksitzung without the Prunksitzungen.

A serious mining accident left the whole of NRW and Gelsenkirchen in fear.
At the Consolidation colliery, 10 miners were buried in a serious mining accident.
A drama deep underground in which only a few of those trapped could be rescued.
People in Gelsenkirchen preferred to think of another event: Schalke 04 met the favorites Bayern Munich in the DFB Cup semi-final: a soccer thriller and a great moment for 18-year-old Olaf Thon.
It was now or never for Duisburg's Rolf Milser at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
It was the weightlifter's last chance to win Olympic gold.
He had trained for two years for this moment, for the all-important competition.
What followed was gold and a jubilant reception in his home town, to which he has remained loyal to this day.

Musically, Herbert Grönemeyer and Alphaville were at the top of the podium in 1984.
With the No. 1 album "4630 Bochum", Grönemeyer created a monument to his home town and wrote pop history.
And in Münster, Marian Gold experienced his breakthrough with his band "Alphaville" and stormed the charts: "Big in Japan" and "Forever Young" became mega-successes.
