Thalia Theater Hamburg

When the Thalia Theater was founded in Hamburg in 1843, it was simply called the "Second Theater", as there was already a theater in the city, the Deutsches Schauspielhaus.
But the founder Maurice Cherie did not like this name.
He wanted to dedicate his theater to the muse of comedy - and his wish for "Thalia Theater" prevailed.

And under his direction and that of Leopold Jessner, Erich Ziegel and Willy Maertens, among others, the house developed into a popular entertainment theater.
In 1969, Boy Gobert took over the directorship, bringing in directors such as Peter Zadek, Hans Neuenfels and Jürgen Flimm, who finally took over the house in 1985 and successfully managed it for 15 years.
Robert Wilson's musicals "The Black Rider" and "Alice" - both in collaboration with Tom Waits - enjoy worldwide success.

The Thalia becomes and remains the most commercially successful state-run spoken theater in Germany.
In the summer of 2000, Ulrich Khuon takes over the Thalia Theater.
His clear focus on decisive directorial handwriting, the continuous collaboration with young and important playwrights, as well as the trust in the power of a lively and strong ensemble form the framework of the Thalia Theater.
