Oldenburg State Theater

The Oldenburg State Theater is not easy to discover, but it is well worth a voyage of discovery.
Anyone setting off for the university city in the north of Germany should not be afraid of the provinces.
A historic old town center, numerous parks and villas characterize the former residential city on the border to Holland.

Germany's smallest state theater has always been an important social meeting place.
It was built in 1833 by carpenter Muck.
The Grand Duchess Cäcilie von Oldenburg financed the original wooden building.
In 1881, the Grand Ducal Residence Theater was built in the Italian Renaissance style.
In 1891, a fire completely destroyed the theater, but only two years later it was reopened as one of the most beautiful "Gründerzeit theaters" in northern Germany with seating for almost 1000 spectators.
The core of this splendid theater building has been preserved to this day, albeit partially rebuilt and extended.

The Oldenburg State Theater is one of the few theaters in Germany to have survived the Second World War almost unscathed.
The years after the war served to return to the classical tradition.

In addition to the main theater, there has been a small theater since 1998, which is also home to the Auguste Hinrichs Theater.
Its task is to cultivate the Low German language.
The inventor of the Mainzelmännchen, Wolf Gerlach, previously worked as a stage designer in Oldenburg for nine years and developed designs for Erwin Piscator.
