Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz

The "Schaubühne am Halleschen Ufer" was founded in 1962 as a private theater with a politically and socially committed repertoire.
In 1970, Peter Stein, a group of young theater makers and actors, joined the Schaubühne.
Against the backdrop of the 1968 movement and based on dissatisfaction with the municipal theater system of the time, a co-determination model was to enable new forms of joint theater work.

The development of an exceptional ensemble of actors was made possible by the right of all artistic staff to have a say in the selection of plays and repertoire policy and by a scientific and long-term dramaturgy.
Over 30 invitations to the Berlin Theatertreffen, 44 television recordings of Schaubühne productions and numerous international guest performances clearly document the success of this model.
The careful handling of texts and epochs of world literature and their psychological illumination are regarded as the "Schaubühne style".

In addition to exploring Greek tragedy, the age of Shakespeare, Chekhov, 19th century playwrights and German and French classicism, the Schaubühne's repertoire included plays by contemporary authors such as Botho Strauß and Peter Handke.
Peter Stein remained artistic director until 1985.
His companions, the directors Klaus Michael Grüber, Luc Bondy and Robert Wilson, worked at the Schaubühne until the end of the 1990s.

When the Schaubühne was relocated to a former cinema building on the upper Kurfürstendamm in 1981, it was renamed "Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz".
Due to its architecture, the theater has three independent venues, which can also be used together.
After Luc Bondy and Jürgen Gosch, director Andrea Breth continued the theater's tradition as artistic director.
Since 1999, the Schaubühne has been working as an acting and dance theater under the artistic direction of Sasha Waltz, Thomas Ostarmeier, Jens Hillje and Jochen Sandig.
Their initial manifesto -
equal pay for all, regular meetings and joint repertoire planning - reflects the co-determination model of the Schaubühne's beginnings.

"This used to be a left-wing theater of war"
