German-Sorbian Folk Theater Bautzen

Many people initially associate the name Bautzen with the infamous Stasi prison Bautzen II. But the town in Upper Lusatia does not deserve this negative image.
It is over a thousand years old, is sometimes called the "Nuremberg of the East" because of its beautiful old town and castle, and is home to the only professional bicultural theater in Germany.

The performances of the Deutsch-Sorbisches Volkstheater are shown in both German and Sorbian.
The Sorbs have lived in Lusatia since the 6th century, they founded the city of Bautzen and today around 40,000 Sorbs speak Sorbian in everyday life.
Bautzen's theater can look back on a tradition of over 300 years; the first theater house in Bautzen is mentioned as early as 1700 and the famous Neuberin made guest appearances in the city.
