German dynasties

The Hohenzollerns

No other dynasty is more closely linked to the fate of Germany.
German princes, kings and emperors have emerged from the Hohenzollern dynasty.
How do the descendants deal with the legacy of their forefathers?
What paths have they taken?
The family itself provides the answers.
In the documentary "German Dynasties: The Hohenzollerns", Georg Friedrich Prince of Prussia, Karl Friedrich Prince of Hohenzollern and many others provide an exclusive personal look behind their great names.

The film team accompanied the family for a year.
The camera is also present in the summer of 2011, when the Prince of Prussia and the Prince of Hohenzollern invite family and friends to Hohenzollern Castle in Baden-Württemberg to celebrate the 950th anniversary of their house.
Centuries ago, the dynasty split into two lines here, which still exist today: The Swabian princely house and the Prussian royal dynasty, which provided the German monarchs until 1918.

The documentary presents the heads of both lines in public and private moments.
The portraits of Georg Friedrich Prince of Prussia and Karl Friedrich Prince of Hohenzollern are juxtaposed with the eventful, often dramatic past of the dynasty, which is illustrated with opulent shots of original locations and rare archive treasures.

First broadcast: Monday, April 23, 2012, 11:30 p.m., ARD.
