The miracle of Bern

The game

Only 15 minutes of moving footage of the legendary 1954 World Cup final have ever existed.
No other parts of this sensational success have ever been reconstructed.
Until now.

After extensive, worldwide archive research, it has been possible for the first time to present 40 minutes of the gripping and emotional final - in a double pass with the legendary radio broadcast by reporter Herbert Zimmermann. Instead of short, isolated image excerpts, the action can be followed in long passages of the ball. Previously unpublished moves show the ball skills of the German players, while previously unseen scoring chances by the Hungarians show goalkeeper Toni Turek as a true "soccer god". The film presents the 3:2 from five different perspectives alone. The unique color footage of the final, which was previously thought to be lost, is sensational: for the first time, all five goals can be seen in color.

First broadcast: Tuesday, April 27, 2004, 8:15 p.m., ZDF.
