Aldi versus Lidl

The duel

It's the big battle for the low prices.
With a total of more than 7,600 stores, Germany's largest discounters Aldi and Lidl are fighting for customers' favor.
They offer everything from basic foodstuffs to drills, from shrimp to clothing.
In Germany alone, they generate 35 billion euros in sales every year.
Their motto: quality at a low price.
"ZDFzeit" and BROADVIEW TV want to find out more and have the discounters compete in a duel: Aldi versus Lidl.
Who is better in price, who offers the best quality?

Two average German families go on a big shopping trip for "ZDFzeit" - once only at Lidl, once only at Aldi.
Whose food is cheaper?
Can own brands replace the favorite products that have often been used to for many years?
The products of both discounters are compared in numerous individual tests: Which batteries last longer?
Which flowers are fresher?
Which clothes are more durable?

Konny Reimann also lends a hand: Germany's best-known emigrant puts drills, jigsaws and angle grinders through their paces.

The film also takes a look at the history of both discounters: from the Albrecht brothers' first store to the Lidl Group's race to catch up.
There have been many conflicts in the Aldi versus Lidl duel: price wars, surveillance scandals and accusations of poor pay for employees and suppliers.

In the end, there can only be one winner.
Who is Germany's best discounter?
