Sebastian Hubel works as a prop master at Schauspiel Leipzig.
He can find or make almost anything a director could wish for in the way of animals, instruments or weapons.
To bring a real horse onto the stage, the prop master even takes riding lessons.
And he can even get theater blood in different flavors.
The prop master - a hunter and gatherer, hobbyist and tinkerer, buyer and doer.
Together with the stage designer or set designer, the prop master checks which utensils are needed for a production in addition to the costume or set.
Depending on the director's requirements, the prop master has to make, build, buy or find props.
In doing so, he often draws from the existing stock of props and modifies existing items if necessary.
He is also responsible for special productions, for which he must have knowledge of materials and the history of art and culture.
He has a lot to do directly before, during and after a performance: Before the performance, the props must be prepared so that the actors can use them quickly and correctly.
Even during the performance, props such as fake blood are produced.
Afterwards, everything has to be tidied up, cleaned or repaired for the next day.
The prop master often has an additional qualification that allows him to use pyrotechnical effects.
If there is no in-house armourer, he is also responsible for the provision and reworking of weapons for the stage.
