New stage Senftenberg

28,000 inhabitants, no cinema, one theater - that's Senftenberg in Lower Lusatia.
And what a theater!

The "Neue Bühne Senftenberg" has been named "Theater of the Year 2005/06" alongside the Deutsches Theater Berlin, the Münchner Kammerspiele and the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg by 39 independent critics of the trade magazine "Theater heute".
The award is the well-deserved reward for the commitment of the entire ensemble, led by artistic director Sewan Latchinian, who has been at the helm of the theater since 2004.
He brings world premieres to the small town and launched the annual GlückAufFest, which offers entertainment at its best on seven Saturdays, each with a different program at several venues - until late into the night, with a campfire and breakfast together in the morning.

The "Neue Bühne Senftenberg" emerged from the "Theater der Bergarbeiter" in 1990.
This was founded in 1946 at the suggestion of Soviet Colonel Soldatov in a former gymnasium and was primarily intended for the rapidly growing industrial workforce in the region.
Senftenberg lived from brown coal in GDR times and is now trying to transform the former open-cast mines into local recreational landscapes.

Esther Schweins introduces the small theater in Brandenburg and visits one of the director's cooking shows, which are always sold out.
The actress Annekathrin Bürger tells how she met her husband in the theater and advertised the city on GDR television.
Artistic directors Ulf Reiher, Heinz Klevenow and Sewan Latchinian talk about their experiences in the small town.
Archive footage shows how the "Theater der Bergarbeiter" lived up to its name in GDR times by bringing miners onto the stage.
