A fascinating path that the 2.13m tall popular figure has taken in a very unusual way and which is closely linked to his unique relationship with his discoverer, coach and mentor Holger Geschwindner. The former national basketball player - an Olympic participant in 1972 - and physicist met the young Nowitzki quite by chance in 1994.
