OUR COUNTRY 1978

Rebellion with Minipli

1978 is a year in which there is a lot of dancing and protesting.

It's a great year for music-loving young people.
The disco wave swept across the country and new discotheques with light shows and fog sprang up everywhere.
"Who dances like John Travolta" is the name of a dance competition in which the Kahl brothers also take part.
Like their idol John Travolta in the movie "Saturday Night Fever", they also come from a working-class background and dream of becoming famous.

At the same time, Düsseldorf and the Ratinger Hof become the nucleus of a new youth movement: the punks arrive.
They dance pogo and want nothing to do with the bourgeois world.

The steel workers are on strike - the companies respond with lockouts.
There is a bitter labor dispute in NRW all year round.
Even during the festive Christmas period, the workers refuse to rest.

Things are going badly for Minister President Kühn and the SPD.
Once again, WestLB is embroiled in a scandal that leads to Finance Minister Halstenberg having to vacate his chair.
And then there is the big referendum.
Today it would be called a "comprehensive school", but in 1978 it was still called a "cooperative school".
This was to be introduced in 1978, but the people grumbled.
The "Stop Koop" initiative was launched and brought the law to an end.
The era of Heinz Kühn comes to an end and a new Minister President arrives: Johannes Rau.

It is a fantastic year for 1. FC Köln.
Under coach Hennes Weisweiler, the club wins the double and Dieter Müller becomes top scorer.
We experience the dramatic season finale together with the striker.
FC Köln's title was already a certainty, but Borussia Mönchengladbach deliver a historic match against Borussia Dortmund and snatch the championship trophy from Cologne's grasp by the skin of their teeth.

The film is narrated by Pinar Atalay, who was born in Lemgo in 1978.
She tells the stories and events of her birth year and turns the film into a personal journey through time.
