At the height of his career, Joaquin Phoenix suddenly seems to have thrown everything overboard in 2009. He has starred in blockbusters, made cinema history as Emperor Commodus in "Gladiator" and as Johnny Cash in "Walk the Line" and received two Oscar nominations. But suddenly he turns into an unpredictable dervish. He puts on weight, grows his hair and beard and announces that he wants to end his acting career and take off as a rapper instead.
The tabloids pounce on each of the often embarrassing moments that follow, just waiting for the next celebrity to break down after Robert Downey Jr, Britney Spears and so many others. Is the greatest talent of his generation losing control in front of everyone? Or is it rather a game to expose the meaningless star machinery?
